The Sun City Showcase got its beginnings in 2015 when the Director Steven Howard retired from the military, decided to take a break from coaching Women's College Basketball.  Upon retiring, the decision was made to move back to El Paso, TX.  Upon moving to El PasoTexas, Coach Howard identified a serious deficiency in the level of events, tournaments, and showcases compared to those he had seen on the East Coast of the United States during his coaching career.

The first thing that Coach Howard identified was the lack of quality exposure events that a college coach would want to attend in El Paso, TX.  Though the city did provide local tournaments and events, there were no certified NCAA or AAU sanctioned events that would entice a college coach to want to come to El Paso, TX (other than some JUCOs, NCAA DIII and a few close by NAIA schools).

The second issue that Coach Howard identified was that all of the travel teams (because there are only a few true AAU member teams in El Paso, TX) were driving all over the country to play in events that could be hosted here locally in El Paso, TX.  It was at this moment that the dream for the Sun City Showcases was born.  the love of the game of basketball and see so many deserving Borderland student athletes not having the opportunity to use athletics to minimize their cost of going to college, would not allow Coach Howard to completely step away from the game.  

The 1st Annual Sun City Showcase was hosted in the April of 2016 at the Don Haskins Recreation Center.  Run as an NCAA certified event, Coach Howard was able to host the first NCAA Certified event in a very long time in El Paso.  Participants came in from Dallas, TX; San Antonio, TX; Las Cruces, NM; Virginia, North Carolina, and locally from El Paso, TX.  From this event 2 players received college scholarship offers of the 16 that were in attendance (all high school boys).

In the Summer of 2017, the Second Annual Sun City Showcase Top 150 was hosted.  This event was run as an invitational event for all returning All District level player from across the state of Texas.  Players came in from as far as Dallas, TX; Beaumont, TX; Port Arthur, TX; Austin, TX; San Antonio, TX; as well as locally from El Paso.  Though the event did not reach its goal of 150 participants, we saw a dramatic increase in the number of participants.  The second event saw a total of 55 student athletes registering for the event.  Out of this event, we saw another 2 players sign college scholarship offers while every senior girl in the event was contacted by college coaches who saw the events live stream.

What's Next?

By introducing video live streaming into all of our showcase events, we have been able to bring the student athletes into the offices of college coaches across America.  Along with our partnerships with Pathway 2 College LLC and now P2C Athlete Prep and Carolina Fire, we feel that we will be able to assist so many student athletes not only across the state of Texas but across the United States.  

We are truly excited for what's in store for 2018.  Not only will we be hosting our 3rd Annual Texas Top 150 Showcase, but we will be adding several more events to the Sun City Showcase Family of events.

          - Texas "TOP GUN" Showcase.  This will be for teams to bring the best 5 players and prove it on the court who is the best.

          - Sun City Hoops Classic tournament series.  We will be hosting an event in Texas and one in my hometown Martinsville, VA!

          - VA Top 150 Showcase.  We will be hosting one for the boys and one for the girls on separate weekends to maximize their exposure opportunity.

These are just a few of the things that we have planned for this upcoming 2018 competition year.  We look forward to being able to put on top notch events with quality evaluators and staff (all former or current college, high school, and club level coaches from across the nation.  If you haven't been to one of our events, come and find out for yourself the opportunity you have been missing out on.  It's an experience that I'm sure will have you wondering why you haven't participated in one of our events before.
